From a For Sale ad for a 1984 Honda CX650E:
"This bike was running like a charm till my son abruptly
downshifted on Highway 1 and knocking engine sound
since then."
I've spoken to the guy's mechanic and he says it's likely
a piece of broken piston ring in the upper cyl.
I could use a running CX650 engine for my GL500 project.
Q1: Would it fit a GL500 frame?
Q2: Is this likely to be a top end only repair job...?
(considering that the whole drive train got stressed)

If you need an engine, why not consider buying a GOOD one?

GL/CX650 motors are hard to find (around here at least).

It's probably cheaper and easier to drive a few hundred miles buying a
parts bike with a good engine than it is to rebuild a crappy engine.
I see a fair number of used CXes on the Minneapolis Craigslist, I'm
sure they're around in other cities somewhat nearer you, too.

You cannot remove the piston or the rod without taking the whole engine apart.
