What strikes me when I watch that movie is how incredibly slowly they
rode. 45-50mph cross country. Having ridden across the U.S. three
times now, I think I would go crazy if I tried it at those speeds.

With big miles to cover speed is irresistible. But I'd rather ride for
4 hours at 50 mph than 4 hours at 80 mph (which if you're just riding
for fun, IS an option). I don't like the noise and buffeting above 60
or so. But then I've never tried a Goldwing either.

When I did my California to London, to Assen, Holland, to Nice,
France, to London, to California trip I was in Europe for 24 days.
Most of the time I woke up before daybreak, struck my tent, loaded the
bike up, and rolled out of the campground just as the sun came up.
Then I'd ride fast, I did a couple 500 mile days, though usually not
that much. My trip speed average for time spent riding and miles
ridden was in the 70mph range.
But many times I rode like a banshee until 3 or 4 in the afternoon and
then broke out the province map and found the nearest campground.
Though from Lyon to the south coast I rode pretty much 10 hours a day
for 2 days, finding a campsite just before dark the first night.
I was in the Alps, and the roads just kept pulling me along... ride
another hour, they kept saying. Time just flew by, and I went as fast
as the roads permitted. Which, French provincial roads being so well
maintained, was quite fast.
I found it all fun. Sometimes, the purpose of the riding was to get
somewhere, and then have fun once there. Sometimes I was just having
lots of fun blasting up and down canyon roads and through the forest.
But I was never riding so fast I couldn't stop to explore something
interesting. Though since I had a schedule to keep (yes, the trip was
obsessively planned - grin) I often had to make up some time.
