Thanks for that. As I said to Bob M., I am so culturally illiterate that I
thought it was just the UK. I had no idea there were so many.

Many US cars had the steering wheel on the same side as we do, back in
the early 20th century. There wasn't any defined 'side of the road to
drive on' for quite some time.
A surprising number of European countried used to drive on the left,
pre-1939. Hungary, for one. I have an old book at home with them listed.
Pre-1928 and the Anschluss, half the Austrian provinces drove on the
left and half on the right, which raised the interesting question of
what happened at provincial borders.

I've run into just that situation, at the border between Hong Kong
(which is now a "Special Administrative Region") and mainland
China proper. What they have is basically a big plaza; you have to
stop anyway to clear immigration, etc. (Hong Kong still isn't QUITE
part of China in that regard), so they just give you a huge expanse
of concrete in which to do that. But when you leave, the exits will
route you to the correct side of the road for whichever way you're
going.
