Anybody using a convertible mesh jacket such as the
Fieldsheer Moto Morph or Joe Rocket Alter Ego ?
I like mesh gear for summer riding but just froze my
ass off again when I misjudged the weather. I'd really
like something that would work between say 55-100F
with a pocket to pack any hunk of shell or liner not
currently being worn.
Thanks for any thoughts

I use a Power Trip jacket.
http://www.power-trip.com/mens/mensjackets_powershift.html
It has a waterproof inner liner, the mesh layer and an outer shell. I
tried riding with the waterproof liner and found it didn't breath at
all and it is not all that warm with the outer layer zipped in.
I would rather the mesh layer was a lighter colour. The black is way
too hot if you get stuck in traffic or stalled in road construction.
I pretty much use it just as a mesh jacket now.
It would be fine down to 55 though. Hell that is T-Shirt weather up
here. <g>

I just recently bought a Speed and Strength "coast is clear" jacket.
http://www.ssgear.com/products/men/textile/cicst.html
I don't know how good it is in mesh mode, but it was pretty good riding to
work the other day in the low 60's.
I too removed the waterproof liner, and didn't strip off the outer cover to
get to the mesh sleeves.
I don't know how well it will crash though, but it does have good armor.
At that price, it is disposable after a crash.

Heated grips, maybe? I hear they work darn well, and are always on the bike.
An electric vest packs anywhere big enough for 2 PBJs. Bicyclists' rain
shells pack very small and light. Wear one under the mesh rather than trying
to squeeze the armor into one. This compromises the insulation value
somewhat, but is blocks the wind adequately. Last, all truckstops seem to
sell overpriced, beer gut sized, embroidered and lined windbreakers. I have
a few I picked up in my travels. In all cases, the electric vest is the key.
Don't ride the hills without one.

My thots exactly. Grips do work great and H-D sells a heated kidney belt if
a vest is too much. Some day I'll try a heated seat too.
