I've got a business trip in Milan next month and since I've been dying to
do some alps riding, I'm trying to get in on an Edelweiss tour.

I've got an FJR1300 since '02 and rode an FJ1200 before that.

Anyone familiar with riding conditions this time of year?  I've got decent
boots and a good Hein Gericke jacket, but am looking for a new helmet and
either pants or an aerostitch suit.

Anything else I might not think of given the short notice would be
appreciated ...

Thanks!

Sounds like great fun! the weather over there should be reasonable
Spring weather.  Maybe a tad cool in the mountains, but not that you'll
need much more than warm jacket, pants and gloves.  The ride fast over
there, and the roads are narrow and twistie, although usually very well
paved.  Be careful and keep your wits about you. One of those guided
tours sounds right.  I don't envy you carrying all your gear over there,
but I'm not sure anyone will rent you a helmet and boots and such.
Great place to maybe buy some new leather!

See if you can get a nice nimble bike to deal with all those mountain
twisties and hairpins.

Enjoy the food and please take a camera and post pics someplace for us.

Stay away from the wine during the day.

Heh, in April and May you will find many of the mountain passes still
snowed shut. In mid-June, I rode the Grossglockner pass in a blizzard,
following a snowplow, and in late June, the Furka pass was still closed.

Absolutely.

Thanks for the info, guys.  I'm guessing that Edelwiess knows about the
conditions up there since they've been doing those tours for years.

I'll be bringing a couple of cameras and will definitely post a link to
some pics when I get back.

I booked a BMW R1200ST.  Thought about the F650 but saving less than a
hundred pounds didn't seem worth the tradeoff.

They do know what they are doing.  (My tour was self-arranged. <g>)

Have you ridden any of the new Beemers yet? The R1200ST is a great
motorcycle.

Be careful out there...
