ive recently taken the hydraulic clutch assembly apart on my 89 kawasaki zx-7.
I put it back together and now the engine dies when i shift into first gear.
If i do get it into first, then i have a hard time hitting 2nd and 3rd. I
know the mechanism isnt supposed to be tight against the mount so how can i
tell how far to space it?

Which "mechanism" are you talking about?

The clutch slave cylinder just bolts directly to the cover over the
countershaft sprocket. There is no adjustment to the hydraulic cylinder, just
be sure you have bled all the air out of the cylinder and the
hoses.

I do that by pushing the slave cylinder piston all the way in with a
screwdriver and forcing the air to go back up the hose to the clutch master
cylinder.

The hydraulic clutch piston mounts directly on the chain cover. bikebandit.
com calls it an engine cover. ive changed the fluid and bled the system twice,
so i dont think thats the problem. im wondering if the piston spacing can be
adjusted. there arent any spacers or shims between the piston and the chain
cover, so its left me guessing. Ive tried tightening the piston completely,
half way and so forth. what do you think?

It's a pretty straight-forward assembly and I've never had trouble
with mine. My guess is that you're somehow ending up with air in that
line.

Also, please be aware that you are posting on the Usenet

that you are accessing this newsgroup through some browser-side forum
called MotorcycleKB, so I just thought I'd give you the 411, in case
you didn't know.
