My S40's final drive belt chirps and squeaks -- especially
when cold or wet. I gg'd for this problem and learned
of something called "drive belt dressing".
Actually one blogger recommended using a bar of dry soap.
Intuitively, soap strikes me as inappropriate.
Does (or did) anyone here have this problem, and did the belt
dressing fix it?
Any help appreciated, SQ

Soap is prolly the least destructive dressing. The original belt on my 1990
FLH got replaced at 130,000 miles because it was showing surface (ozone)
cracks. H-D does NOT recommend belt dressing because it is likely to trap
sand or other abrasives, so I use none. The only time it squeeked was when
it hadn't been properly adjusted. I suspect the same is true on your S40.
Follow the shop manual instructions carefully.
