...every time I get another bike, that is: agonize over some new
(and ominous) sound it's making.
This time it's a metallic ticking sound in time with the motor revs
on my Dnepr, like a tiny hammer bashing away at a solid metal object
such as an engine block. It seems to be louder on the left jug.
The sound is intermittent; it's worse when the engine is warmed
up, just above idle -- and it goes away completely when a bike mechanic
listens to it.
ps. The regi says 1974 but various web sites say this model wasn't
built until the mid 80's.
Any help (or reassurance) appreciated

It's a Dnepr; if it didn't make sounds like this, it wouldn't be
running. Do what my brother did during his seven or eight year run of
infatuation with (and ownership of) several Urals: ignore it.
As he put it, "Eventually the source of the noise will become self
evident by fragments of parts exhibiting themselves externally to
where they were originally supposed to contained. Until then, there's
nothing to worry about."

Buy the shop manual and check the valves. The ol' wing does similar
and it's just normal valve tap...or so I tell myself. <crosses fingers>

I'd bet on valves train or timing chain.
Without knowing a whole lot about Dneprs, you might
want to check end play on the rocker arms and figure
out how to adjust it if it's excessive.
On older BMW boxers, the whole rocker assembly is
clamped gently in a C clamp as the head nuts are
tightened down. On newer models, the end play is
adjusted with shims. Cuts down on racket if you get
it right.
Have you changed the oil yet ? You might want to
change it once and look for debris. If you've got
a filter, check that too. Metal bits or metal flour
in either the oil or filter may indicate a problem. :-)
If none of the above, ride it.
