On my 650 Suzuki thumper there's an intermittent clattering
sort of rattle. I first noticed it a few weeks ago and it seems
to be getting more pronounced.

It only happens when the motor is hot (after running under load
for a few miles) and only in a limited rpm range, just above
a fast idle. The sound appears to be coming from the front
of the motor (around the location of exhaust port).

Could this be the top end bearing? The bike has just over
8,000 km (4800 miles). Another factor is that perhaps
I lug the motor a bit more than I should, but not under
hard acceleration, just when I'm cruising at constant speed.

Check the valve lash. If the sound is like a bucket of bolts your
timing chain stretched way too soon. I suggest you let the shop do
that bit...dahikijk

Slight pre-ignition, due to a lean condition.  Drill out
your idle mix cover and open the screw a quarter-turn.

That, or the buttforr.
