On my way back from a ride tonight at dusk, a near miss happened....
I was in the right lane coming up to a red light on a 4 lane street, no
traffic except for a van in the right lane stopped at the light ahead of me.
I had the option of either lane, I decided to move into the left a take
advantage of the upcoming green light and empty lane. The light turned
green, the van was about 25 feet in front of me, I touched the throttle just
enough to hear the big twin start to rumble, the van's brake lights went out
and it started moving.
To my surprise the back door of the van swung up, a large gray metal box of
some sort fell out along with some bars and many other pieces and parts. I
heard the crash of the box and the clang of pieces hitting the pavement - it
was to my 2 o'clock position about 10 feet ahead on me.
Nothing ended up in my path however I'm sure some of the shrapnel was in the
path of any vehicles behind me. Next time I have the option of staying
behind a vehicle or moving into a open lane I think I'll ALWAYS pick the
open lane.
Be careful out there!

Your lucky day, huh? I'll bet the driver was a startled as you were.

Is a near miss a hit?

It was a Harley Electra Glide in grey.

You should've done that anyway. A motorcycle sitting behind another vehicle
at traffic lights is actually a disgusting thought. Even if there's only one
lane, let alone two.

Well, in the latter case, whether or not you can pull up to a light
alongside a vehicle waiting at a light and share its lane is subject to
local law, not some universal immutable right.

Laws? Laws you say? Anyway the OP said he had the option of any lane,so
sitting behind a CAGE is well.... odd.
