I mistakenly bought a new battery when all I had was a loose
terminal. Once I tightened up the terminals the old one works fine.
Since I cannot return the new one what is the best course of action?
Should I toss the 3 year old battery that I have on the bike or keep
the new one on the shelf until I need it? If I store the new one,
what is the best way to store it?
Thanks.

There is an additional course of action you haven't considered.
You might try to sell it on Craigslist. If the buyer is local, you won't
need to ship it (which you may not be able to do).
However, I would only expect to sell it for 20% - 40% of its value.

Is the battery still in its shipping box (with the acid still in the
bottle)? If so, it's shelf-stable indefinitely. Keep on the shelf!

Excellent point. I was assuming it's all ready to go.

No separate acid. It is all sealed.
Actually, some good news. I just spoke to the dealer that sold it to
me and he says I can return it for store credit. I know eventually I
will need a new one or SOMETHING from him so I think I will do this.
