What do you all do with old helmets.

Recalling what we were told in the MSR class, helmeets should be tossed
every 5 years or so.  So at 400 bucks a pop that's a pretty expensive item
to toss simply because it's old.  Do you just toss them in the trash or is
there some poor person organization that takes them and donates them to
people who can't afford to chunk out 400 bucks (like me).

I just picked up a new Arai, 3/4 with face shield, nice helmet - but DANG!
that pricetag.

Grab a look at helmetcity.com . You don't absolutely have to pay
Arai prices. A helmet that meets Snell specs should be fine and
can be way less expensive than that.

The problem with mail order helmets is that you can't try before you
buy, and the wrong fit will be making you miserable for years.

And that's really why I bought what I bought.  It was very comfy, even after
30 minutes in the overheated store, it doesn't block my peripheral, and
allows me to hear without going deaf from wind noise.

But again, the 5 year thing was straight from the MSR class.

60 bucks a pop isn't a big deal, over 5 years that's 12 bucks a year - and
so long as it does its job who cares about styling right??  I care about it
to some degree, but I also like to support my local merchants so I guess for
this one time I took it in the shorts and will write it off as a learning
experience.

But at the same time I didn't get an answer about what you all do with old
ones - or is your answer that you don't discard them unless they've taken
damage from an impact?  Well I did get one answer, but I'm not ghoulish
enough to take rifle shots at a helmet - nothing personal really, its just
too gruesome to me.
