Do you have spray equipment? And are you going for just a color change
or trying to do something artistic?

I was told that the fiberglass shell helmets could be painted , but the
molded plastic shell type shouldn't be . Might be OK with some paints , but
the solvents/chemicals in some will "degrade" the shell .
I wear mine whether required or not , and it's just not that critical what
it looks like as long as it protects my noggin . My brains are scrambled
enough already .

This is my girlfriend's helmet and she intends to
try something artistic.
I'm guessing an acrylic might be the best bet.

They've got the small-volume put-ups you need in order to do that kind
of work without breaking the bank, and a complete system from primer
through clearcoat. Waterborne so solvent attacking the helmet should
not be an issue. They even have an instructional DVD on painting helmets.
