I'm trying to restore a neglected CX500 (parked in shed for 5 years
without proper storage prep). The bike runs, reluctantly.
Wrench sez the carbs are full of varnish and I need to (a) drain
the tank, put in some fresh gas with carb cleaner and run it for
a while. Failing that, (b) strip down the carbs and bring them in
to his shop be hot-tanked.
Despite long lists of implausible wonders claimed by the makers
of liquid tune-up concoctions I've never known them to do much good,
but OTOH being bone-lazy I'm for trying plan (a) first. Has anyone here
had any success with this method, and if so which brand should I use.

I had the same problem. Took the carbs out, carefully cleaned them, put
them back in...no improvement. The bike would start and run but there
was a 3-second delay between turning the throttle and seeing the power
and the mid-speed range 4000 to 5000 rpm was the worst. Finally just
said 'f%&* it', put a little isopropanol-based fuel additive in the
tank, and started riding. After about 5 tankfulls (approx 1,000 miles)
the carbs were working fine.

Not to belabor the point but I'd be willing to bet your problem would have
disappeared whether you used the additive or not. Did you add the stuff with
each tank? (Just wondering)

If you think that some bloody additive is that good, ask yourself why
the fuel manufacturers don't add it themselves.
This is the stock answer to the proponents of just about every type of
snake oil.

If you don't know what you're doing, don't do it. And RTFM.

Because they're engaged in an evil conspiracy to get
rich selling you more gasoline. Same reason they've
suppressed the 500 mpg carburetor for all these decades.
