My boys Yamaha SRX 250 has been dripping fuel for a few weeks. Sick of
the smell, I'm taking the carbs off to check if the float is
stuck/stuffed. My first stumbling block was getting the tank off. The
fuel switch has a 'prime','on','res' 3-way lever.....but none of those
positions turns the fuel 'off'! I had to drain the tank.
Should this happen or is the 3-way fuel switch stuffed?

Two possible problems with the petcock.
1. There is a gouge in the four hole grommet between the 'prime' and
the 'on'
ports. This can be temporarily remedied by rotating the grommet or
flipping it over.
2. The automatic shutoff valve on the backside of the petcock isn't
sealing properly.

It's a vacuum tap, so shouldn't flow fuel with the tap in the 'on'
position unless the engine is running. So, yes, it's borked.
This would also suggest that the reserve position is now superfluous.

I don't think so, since regaredless of whether the vacuun-actuated
functionality has been lost, the standpipe for the ON position is
still physically higher than the RESERVE standpipe, so fuel flow -
regardless of the presence or absence of vacuum - will stop when the
fuel level falls below the standpipe for the ON position.
What no one has pointed out (that I have seen) is that even if the
vacuun-actuated functionality has been lost (as is certainly appears
to have been, given the description) the bike should still not LEAK
fuel unless the float valve(s) or valve seat(s) is(are) bad.
There are at least two different problems here that need to be
solved. The petcock probably needs a rebuild, and the carb float
valve(s) need(s) looking at.

Doh. Yes, I was confusing it with being left on prime all the time.
