LOL....I have moved the fire extinguisher closer to the workbench! The
car is just about sorted. The steering rack boots needed replacing, no
biggie, but of course now thats almost finished I can't find my split
pin collection....and I've dismantled the car in the driveway (sunny
day) so I can't take the bike to get the bits I need. Doh! I've been
away from the mechanicing game for to long. I never used to pull
anything apart till I had all I needed at hand.

I'd have clamped off the pipe going to the carb(s) with a pair of Molegrips
and sorted the possibility that the petcock has an "off" position once the
thing was more accessible.

So would I.....next time. :) I was under the delusion that at least one
of the settings would have stopped the flow.

Don't feel bad. The first valve like that I ever saw was on an 1100 Suzi.
Expecting "off-on-res" I found "pri-on-res" and ass-umed that "pri" meant
"primary" ..... until I rode the 600# beast to reserve and ended up pushing
it a mile. But that's not as bad as the scooter a friend bought. His carb
dries out if it's not ridden daily then the battery cannot generate enough
vacuum to turn the automatic valve on. Ain't all these improvements grand?
