My clock just turned over 76,000 on the ol'88 and it runs better then
ever (2nd owner) browsing the honda service manual and I can't find
anything on when to change timing belts. Also, will this engine sustain
damage if I lose one?

Change them now. My buddy who has a GL1500 says 50k miles is the interval
and I have no reason to disbelieve that. And I am pretty sure that you
will have valve / piston interface if the timing belts break.
Don't bother buying the Honda belts unless you don't mind spending lots
of extra money... according to this page (caveat emptor, YMMV, etc.):

the Gates #T275 is the same belt, as is the NAPA #250275.
http://www.rockauto.com has the Gates T275 for $18.93 each,
vs. $58.99 each from http://www.partsfish.com for Honda part #
14401-MN5-004. http://www.ronayers.com has them for $47.14 each, or
http://www.servicehonda.com for $41.80.
Take a close look at the waterpump while you're in there, this would be
a good time to change it, too.

Wow, the GL1000 goes 72,000(recomended) adn safely
to 74,000mi before a change. Yes on ALL Goldwings
it becomes VERY expensive when you lose a cam belt
as Honda motors (at least on the GL series) are
interfearance motors. I.E. the valves/pistons
interfear with each other.

Really? I'm starting to be glad I NEVER wanted the
GL1500...the water pumps on the GL1000/1100 are
obviously better. Most go well over 90,000 trouble
free miles as long you use silicate free
anti-freeze.

Max is 100,000 miles. Most people recommend doing it about every 50k
simply because it's a WHOLE heck of a lot cheaper to swap belts than to
replace bent valves if a belt breaks.

I agree and thanks..it looks like a job I can do myself,I will also
check the water pump which brings up another question, where can I
purchase reasonable priced parts only for a 1500GL?
Thanks all
