I have a friend saying he'll give me this bike to work on. He says it needs
-- to be "re-keyed." What does this mean?
-- a new rear wheel bearing. How hard is this? I have removed and
re-installed car bearings in the recent past in older cars
-- carburetor(s) rebuilt. I've never done this but I know what a carburetor
is supposed to do and know people used to rebuild these all the time. Would
finding parts be a problem?
It was running okay recently.
I do practically all the upkeep and repairs on my car, a 1991 Honda Civic:
disc and drum brake overhaul; timing belt change; oil, radiator coolant,
and manual transmission oil changes; adjust timing; check valve lash;
change plugs, wires, battery. I have the time and would be up to a minor
challenge or two and learning more.
Thanks in advance for any help or suggestions.

Sounds like you should be able to do the work, at least with respect to
experience. You may need some new tools, but I'm not familiar enough
with BMW bikes to know one way or another.
A good place to start for things BMW:

Sounds like he needs a new key cut to match the ignition or a new key AND
ignition.....
