Of what would this consist? So far from my study: New plug,
air filter, and maybe fuel filter. I have a timing light and
for fun will try to check this, too. Comments?

Also, is there a free web site that has an online manual
(preferably factory service) for this motorcycle?

Regular oil and oil filter changes and occasional valve clearance adjustments.

Modern motorcycle engines almost *never* change timing, so you won't need the
timing light.

Late post here but for the benefit of future readers, the Savage (S40)
also needs to have the cam chain checked every 5K miles starting at
about 10k miles 'cause the adjuster tends to fall apart when the chain
wears past a certain point. Bad juju if that happens while you're doing
70 down the freeway.

The cam chain will need to be replaced at around 15 to 25 thousand
miles.
