This can be a correct statement. But for myself
it is a Catch 22.
Some background may be in order:
In the early seventies I saw schematics for
a CDI for the first time. Built one and it never
made it onto the R50 I owned then.
It wasn't reliable.
I still needed the points to trigger the
condenser and that meant I had to
change the points setup of the beamer, wasn't
sure that the mechanical advance would work
and thought: "forget it".
I still needed points, because there was
nothing like a hall effect switch available on
the market. I'm not sure if that effect even had
been discovered then.
I remember that the description said that there
was a different type of coil needed.
I am not an electronic expert (you guessed correct),
but it makes sense. The points type has the time to
line up all tiny magnets in the core.
The CDI type only has a short time to create the
magnetic field.
My prototype wasn't reliable. I figured it had
to do with the crummy transistors and *I thought*
it had to do with me not having the CDI-type of
coil.
So Yes: I never changed points for electronics.
But you got me puzzled. What in the world
causes my "CDI=...." you to react like this?
Rob.
