I recently bought a 95 Intruder 800 and notice that it starts great
and runs well for the first 1-2 miles before losing power and
backfiring at the lowest ends of 1-3 gear. The backfiring is through
the exhaust and it runs fine again once I power through the low speed.
I have already had the Carbs cleaned and rebuilt and have changed
both air cleaners and cleaned the fuel filter and tank. Still, the
same problem.

I am thinking that maybe the valves need adjusting or that the fuel
pump is going bad.

Can anyone give me some advice on what to check?

Thanks for your help.

Open up your idle mixture screws 1/4 to 1/2 turn to get rid of the
deceleration backfiring.

The idle mixture screws are located on the underside of the
carburetor, forward of the float bowls.

They are concealed behind EPA anti-tamper plugs which can be removed
by carefully drilling a
pilot hole, threading a small sheetmetal screw into the plug, and
pulling it out with a pair of pliers.

The anti-tamper plugs are very thin aluminum, so a heavy hand on your
drill can cause it to break through the top of the plug and hit the
idle mixture screw itself.

The first time I drilled out anti-tamper plugs, I wrapped masking tape
around a small drill and twisted it with my fingers.

Try clearing petrol tank "airing" cleaning. May be youre fuel tank isn't
ventilating well enough..

Sorry for my English btw.
