The key word here is magneto. Inductive ignition with points and a
coil is a different animal. Magnetos do not generally use anvance
mechanisms. Not sure but I think the reason is that it takes a lot
more force to turn since it is the rotation of the mag that creates
the electrical spark. With the points setup it just has to turn the
cam that opens the points. The electricity is provided by the battery
or the charging system. The higher force required by the mag
overpowers the little counterweights of the advance mechanism.

Sorry Bruce, but all the examples I posted above (Rotax with Bosch,
etc.) have magnetos and also have advance mechanisms. It's not uncommon.
