Speedometer stopped working

 Hello!

I have a 1991 Honda Nighthawk CB250.  I had the speedometer cable
changed about a month ago and this evening it decided to stop working.
The needle does not move when I drive around.  Any idea what the
problem could be?

Pull the cable out of the back of the speedo. Look inside and check to
see whether or not the speedo drive is stripped. Check the drive at the
other end as well, if it's accessible. Might as well check to see if the
cable's in one piece also, just on the off chance that it broke. That
should pretty much cover the possibilities, I think.

The other ideas are far more likely, however if it's not one of those:

Mechanical speedos have a spinning magnet causing a cup attached to the
needle to move.

The magnet can shatter and/or the cup can fall off the bearings, meaning
the instrument is toast. It also usually freezes the input gear on the
back where the cable attaches, so if it doesn't turn freely, this might
be the problem.

Suzukis have a bad habit where a small sintered metal piece in the drive
on the front wheel hub shatters. It's only a $9 part though. I don't
know if Hondas suffer from this. Take the cable off down there and see
if you can see anything turn when you spin the front wheel.

Broekn cable down at the wheel end?

And have you had the wheel out recently? If you don't get the "ears" of
the speedo drive back properly in the slots that drive them, that would
do it.
