When I went to start my spare bike I found the petrol had shrivelled up into
a sticky red goo and the fuel tap strainer was full of rust - obviously the
tank needs cleaning out and lining to stop the rust going any further.
Some American magazines I used to read have mentioned a product called
Creemit or something similar, anyone know of such a product available in the
UK?
TIA.

Kreem is the US stuff.
Pet-Seal is the UK equivalent.

Frost also has a tank sealing kit made by POR-15. If you're down in SE
England, I've got one that you can have for a few beer tokens - it's
unused, but the bottle with the cleaner is weeping slightly so I'm not
going to send it through the post.

Thanks for the offer - I just found a spare tank I forgot was there, buried
under a lot of junk at the back of the shed, its in far better condition all
round so I'll probably leave it at that.
