I have just acquired a motorcycle jack, the kind that lifts the bike
under the engine. It's by Sears/Craftsman.

It's designed to lift against a flat surface, but the DL650 has very
little of that underneath. My plan so far is to add a couple of
appropriately-shaped 2x4s between the bike and the lift, and I would
appreciate any tips or suggestions as to good places where to lift.

I am really hoping to avoid removing the exhaust system just to use this
lift.

Thanks in advance for any help.

From looking at pics of the DL650, it looks like the same style of adapter
plate I made for my SV650 would work perfectly. Of course you have to
check the dimensions and alter it to suit. It's not that hard to make, if
you can't weld it yourself you can still cut out the pieces with a $15
angle grinder and/or a hacksaw and take it somewhere to get them welded.

Thanks. I acknowledge the original designer of this adapter on my web pages
and I want to do so here, as well:

"Thanks to Bill Noel who came up with a plan for a similar fixture, I
adapted his drawing to the adapter plate that came with my Larin lift. I
made mine a little taller so I have clearance to work around the exhaust
pipes. See Bill's design in the SVRIDER.COM Tips and Tricks section. "

I would also like to emphasise the importance of strapping the bike to
the lift-- otherwise, when you remove the rear wheel the bike will pitch
forward, pivoting on the cross-bolt.

Make sure what ever else you do: Clamp/tie the bike to the lift. Other
then the obvious like the bike wandering around and falling over when
you wrench it, you get into comic balance problems i.e. remove the rear
wheel and the bike drops off the front of the lift like a prom dress.
