V-star 1100 break in

 

I recently bought a new V-star 1100 custom, and in an efford to break
it in I took it on a long run, around 300 kms, paying close attention
not to exceed the recomended 1/3 throttle, however when I returned
home I noticed there was a ticking in my motor.  Have I done damage to
my motor?

 


Was the engine still running when you heard the sound? Maybe it's a
loose valve.

If the engine was shut off, clinking noises in the hot exhaust system
are normal as the engine cools off.

But, if the motorcycle is new, you should have a warranty, so take the
bike to the dealer who sold it to you and ask about the ticking noise,
if it worries you.

I have owned an 05 1100 V-star Silverado, bought new in March 05.  It
has always had a slight ticking of the valves which is normal.  If you
cannot hear the valve ticking, the clearances are too close and could
lead to burnt valves, not a good thing.  Remember, this is an air cooled
engine which tends to be noisey anyway.
