I was in a Pep Boys (united states) the other day and on display there
was a pit bike with what looked identical in my memory to the honda
90cc engine that at the time was in a honda s90. I'm unfamiliar with
who makes the chinese version but obviously it' a clone of the honda
90. Dunno if it's a record insofar as the same design has been going
on since 1965 . Any other designs that have passed from the original
maker but are still in production in a country other than it's origin?
Im guessing the bmw boxer for one. Others? Pat

There are many engines that have been copied, or licensed, or rebadged.
The Japanese bought patents from Europe firms after WW2 and began mass
producing 1930's designs by Horex of Germany.
Benelli of Italy built engines that looked exactly like early Honda engines,
but they were much larger.
Suzukis and Kawasakis are presently being built in China and Korea.
Hyosung builds bikes in Korea that can be mistaken for Suzuki SV650's
You can explore the relationship between Puch and DKW and Adler if you want.
Split singles were sold by Sears and Mongomery Wards. Jawa CZ is probably in
the mix too.
Harley bought 50cc and 250cc Aermacchis and rebadged them.
Royal Enfields have been built under license in the USA and in India.
Somebody once said that Husqvarna's classic 250cc and 400cc 2-strokes were
originally an English design.
So, go ahead and digest this list and get back to us. Let us know if the
manufacturers are copying or cooperating with each other.

Albrecht's given a list of some. There are loads. Yamaha's air-cooled
RD350s were built in India, badged as Rajdoots, as well. Maybe they
still are built there.
There are *loads* of 'old' designs built elsewhere.

I wouldn't assume that a Chinese knockoff is a "design that has passed from
the original maker". More often than not, the knockoff is just made to
resemble the original. If you've ever had to work on one of these miserable
knockoffs, you'd see that the resemblance is only skin deep.
