I HAVE A 1978 YAMAHA XS400 NEED TO KNOW HOW TO SET POINTS GAP. IS IT
TRUE TO SAY WHEN ONE PISTON ITOP DEAD CENTER,THE POINTS FOR THAT
SHOULD BE GAP AT THAT POSITION?

No. When the cylinder that is supposed to fire is about 10 degrees
before top dead center, the points are just barely open.

Look at the subject line. The OP wants to know about the timing of his
XS400. It's 10 degrees BTDC at 1200 RPM, and 36 degrees BTDC at 3100
RPM.

Now, if it's convenient, would you please diminish me?

Wrong again. Never mind the subject line - the question he is asking is
about setting the points gap, *not* the ignition timing.

"NEED TO KNOW HOW TO SET POINTS GAP" is a bit of a clue. You could use
one.
