Hey, KTM owners,
I don't spose this baby will fit on my 97 exc2fiddy?
http://sfbay.craigslist.org/eby/mcy/819065431.html
Oh well it was no great price anyway. What tank should I get then?
So far I see an IMS on justgastanks.com for 242, and an acerbis
numberplate tank which holds 0.8g for $63 on some other site so that
might be perfect. Or do numberplate tanks suck for some reason? How
about shroud tanks, should I consider them if they're available for
97?
I never thought twice about getting a big tank before but notice that
it's nice and easy to move around on this bike. Looks like there are
all kinds of options available for 99 and newer - side plate tanks,
rear fender tanks, etc, but I don't see them or shroud tanks yet for
97. Maybe the shrouds will xchange across all years even tho the
tanks won't?
thx

Hey Doug, someone gave me an older Acerbis number plate tank. Mine holds a
little over one gallon. I build a new mounting bracket and fashioned a
small halogen light to mount above the tank. The other thing you will have
to do is create a new upper guide for the brake hose. Drop me a line & I
can send you some pictures of my setup.
While riding in Utah, I really didn't notice the front tank too much. It
could be my imagination, but when riding in rocks with the number plate tank
full, the front end seems to deflect more off of rocks. Since part of the
number plate tank is higher than the top of the stock tank, I have to run
the front tank dry, shut off it's petcock, then turn on the main tank.

I'll just stick with the 2 liter soda bottle in my pack. Once the
fuel is gone you have several choices.
1. burn the bottle and pack out what's left.
2. collapse the bottle.
3. Just shove it back in the pack and use it again tomorrow.
The extra weight doesn't bother me and the danger can't be any worse
than the 1/4 turn fuel tank lids on the new KTMs.
The bonus is that you now have a way to collect liquids that might be
needed on the trail. Bust a radiator and make it back with you extra
1/2 gallon of water. :-)

The down side is that if you happen to crash and land on your back,
you'll explode.

4. Stick it in a buddies pack when he isn't looking.
