I'm hoping someone has had a similar experience with a 2smoker in the
past and maybe they can help me out here. 07 YZ85 My son had a neutral
start yesterday. Pretty cool! I figured he just had a brain fart and
forgot to put it in gear. Next moto I watch and he shifts to 2nd, you
can feel the bike go into 2nd. Lets out clutch a tad and the damn
thing is back in neutral. It did this a couple times yesterday on the
line. Any idea what to look for before I tear into it? Shift fork not
holding? It even did it once after he slipped the clutch to make sure
he was in gear. It was, but he slipped it again and it was back in
neutral.

I started using Maxima MTL 80W the last 3 trans oil changes. Was using
Belray 80w. I can't see where that would matter but who knows. I
change it often. Too often probably.

Interesting.  Does it happen if you shift the bike into 3rd and then
back to 2nd?  I would simply pull the clutch basket and check out the
shifting mechanism to ensure that the drum it rotates enough to lock
into 2nd gear.

You can't change the gear oil too often, but it's much less expensive
using non-motorcycle branded oils.  I have been using Hona brand ATF
that was given to me in my 2-strokes.  I will switch to whatever is on
sale at Wally World when I need more.

That's exactly what I did on the 2nd moto when it slipped back to
neutral. I shifted it up to 3rd with my hand then back to 2nd.

I am going to pull the clutch out of tonight and put a new boss (inner
basket) in it. It was getting slightly grooved when I put the Hinson
outer basket in a couple weeks ago. I will check it out

Yeah and I always used the cheap(er) stuff in mine but I just can't
bring myself to do it on his race bikes. If he had a trans failure
over the jumps they put on tracks nowadays I would be second guessing
myself. I know, waste of money. But hell someone has to buy it.

Thanks Mike

I'm sure you'll figure it out.  My 2000 GasGas decided not to shift
one day.  I very small sliver of metal was keeping two plates from
sliding against each other.  All I needed was to clean the parts and
new case gasket.

Good luck!

Mike gives very good advice.  You can believe him.

Make sure the shift "spider" from the (pedal) shift shaft is engaging
properly at the shift drum.

Also, if it goes that far, look for either a bent shift fork, or wear
on the pivot points of the shift fork and wear of the shift fork's
"arms".  With Brandon's GasGas XC200, it was the pivot points of the
shift forks, where they attach to the shift drum.

Good Wrenching to you!

Jim
