My '03 XR/CRF50 is running brutally lean on the pilot. Best response
is with the air screw at 3/16 out, if that gives you any indication.
I'm going to give it another cleaning (did it already, but you never
know), but what if there isn't any grunge in there?
My understanding is the pilot jet is non-removable, so how can I
effectively richen the pilot jet? Before you say drill, note that the
jet oriface is about the size of a human hair.
If I can get a wire through it, maybe I can just spin it and wear the
hole bigger?
While I'm on the XR/CRF50 topic, anybody know the what the stock
needle clip setting is?

Its *probably* crunge, but in either case I've had good luck with
torch-tip cleaners, using the not-knurled part for cleaning, and the
knurled part for reaming.
Disassembling some lamp cord can yield some usefully sized rodding-out
wires.

I find the bristles from various wire brushes to be better (stiffer).

Just went through that problem with my grandsons 04 and 05 crf.
Bottomline, replaced carburators.
We were getting crude in them. The techs said, that every time we
cleaned them out we did enlarge the holes. After we replaced the
carbs, ran like champs.

Buy some guitar strings or get some used ones free from a friend. A
whole new set costs less than $4. That'll clean the ports and are
flexible and strong.
