No......not *that* kind of change. A change in steeds.
It looks like I've been talked out of the KDX by an eager buyer so the
search has begun for a suitable replacement.
Pretty much set (not completely....but darn close) on sticking with the
smoking section and moving up into something that doesn't plunge to earth
like a rock should there ever be air beneath the tires.I've really enjoyed
the time on Wilson's CR250 and leaning towards another one for the ability
to swap parts, etc.
Also in the mix are most any of the 200-250cc smokers within a budget of
+-$1,600. With the exception of standard maintenance items(tires, brakes,
fluids), the KDX has cost me exactly $50 bucks in depreciation for 3 years
of riding. I don't consider that a bad deal at all

'Tried the non-smoking section in '09 and recently traded it off for
another 2T.

A CR was on my short list, but a nice YZ came along first.

That's a great deal.
Good luck in your search.

There are some absolutely SCREAMING deals on used GasGases. Other than
Jay owning one, the piss poor resale value seems to be the only flaw
with the bikes (not that that affect me in any way : ) ). You seem
like the kind of guy that would appreciate the may fine qualities of a
Gasser.
For that matter, there are occasional great deals on surprisingly
clean KTM 200EX/C's. They are nothing short of awesome trail bikes.
Good shopping to ya, just don't limit the scope of your search too
much. You might get lucky.

Thanks Tim. Seems like the GG deals are mostly farther west than here. I'm
certainly down for one but the closest I've come so far is a 99 model 250
about 350 miles east in SC that is priced at $1,500. I've ridden Jim's 300
and that was one of the best riding bikes I have ever straddled. You can
forget about the KTM200 in my neck of the woods. Most people call us
REDnecks....but I'd say Orange is more the color of choice and the 200 is
one of the most popular models around. Hard to find and when you do they
want twice the price of it's Asian counterpart.
My scope is open to any brand/color at this point....my budget and the
available inventory keeps pushing the red and blue bikes to the front of the
line. I did get a note from a local that has a buddy in a bind and may want
to unload an 05 KX250 set up for the woods within my price range....waiting
on a call back on that one.

Resale is a non-flaw if you're on the buying end - although there IS a
reason. You can get easily find a late-model GG in your price range.
OTOH, although I haven't ridden anything BUT my GG for the last two
years, they really are pieces of shit, although the brand new ones
sure are pretty.
I recommend sticking with your original idea of a CR250, provided its
a 3rd-generation frame bike (2002+). I'd think about a YZ too. KXs
and RMs have proven themselves unreliable, at least in my epxerience
and in comparison to the CRs and YZs.
