Just an OT rant;
Why are consumer sized diesel trucks so loud? I have heard some of
these trucks louder than their big brother semi's. If semi trucks can
be made to run quietly why can't the factories make their trucks run
quietly? Some of them sound like their exaust manifold bolts are all
backed out two turns.

In stock form all new diesels are actually quiet compared to just a
few short years ago. The reason you have loud ones is just like the
dirt bike world. Most remove stock exhaust and put in a 4-5" system to
keep exhaust temps down and in many cases some just remove the
muffler all together with a straight pipe. Then add a programmer to up
the HP and you got yourself a loud 7000 lbs hot rod. I had a 4"
stainless MBRP exhaust on my ford for a wile with a muffler but after
a wile I put the stock system back on cus I just couldn't stand the
constant drone of the 4" system. I still have the dash mounted switch
that I can go from stock to +60hp and +90hp.

For the exact same reason very few Harley-Davidsons have stock exhausts.
My 2008 F-250 Powerstroke is pretty darn quiet, largely because the use
of up to 7 squirts of 30,000 PSI direct injection per combustion cycle
has things under control and mostly eliminated the diesel's marbles in a
can rattle.
The exhaust smells like a kerosene heater.
