So, it's a '09 RMZ 250 (four stroke). Air filter changed every day, oil,
every 4-8 hours (every other day or three of riding) and Jessi is a top
half of the pack "C" class rider, not really on the revs too often. We
bought the bike with 17 hours (ridden by pro rider Tony Lorousso for
those 17 hours, racing and practice) and the top end was fresh along
with the head and valves when we got it from Tony.
We have 80 hours on the bike and it started running real crappy all of a
sudden the other day and we pulled it off before it blew up as far as we
can tell but it would not stop after that. I took it to the builder and
they did a leak down test and although they have not taken it apart yet
they think it's a cracked piston or burnt, but kicking it, it does not
seem to show any signs of any crunching or other bad noises so we are
hoping to get in and find no other damage.
The builder who I do trust says with 80 hours on the bike (since we
bought it) and the additional 17 with Tony on it, we should split the
case and do the bottom end too (additional 600 bucks or more with parts,
etc.). We talked it over and they said we "could" watch or listen for
sounds like slapping or copper in the oil filter but if it goes, it will
be catastrophic and big(ger) bucks in the end so I was planning on doing
the top AND bottom end, valve springs and seats for somewhere between
1000 and say 1200 from what I can gather.
Buttt.... Yesterday I was at our home track with Tony Lorousso (Pro
Rider, original owner of the bike) and he was saying I should not bother
with the bottom end if it ain't bad. There was another retired pro there
and another friend of Tony's I didn't know but they all have seen Jess
ride for years and know the bike well. They said that Cranks and
bearings are either good, or bad, no real in between. Furthermore they
suggested that if Jessi (based on her riding) were to throw a crank the
chance of a "blowup" was slim, it would most likely just seize...
Now I have a conundrum. If I save the 600 bucks I can Valve her shocks
and set up the suspension on my 125 to give her a usable backup bike.
She wants to do the whole thing cause she is afraid of "blowup" so if I
don't do it and it does happen to blow up bad... I think you all know my
situation. I need to make the right decision here because I don't have
anymore bikes to sell for "repairs" this season, I can barely squeeze
out the race fuel and ice for the seat time... If she blew up again
after this, she would have to ride a different bike for the rest of the
season and she really hates my 125...
Just wondering if any of you have anything to add before I make my
decision, thanks in advance, as always Rowdy Mouse Racing.
8th place at STIMILON! in the Decrepit 45 class!!! Long live the "000"!

I was feeling sorry for you right up until the end there.
My buddy whose child I once victimized with roost is now managing the
Fish House up there in Rocky Hill. So, we may have to have a rematch
race for chowder or something. Stimilon 2011 can't come soon
enough. ;-)

P.S. Jess passed me at one time in Headlight moto 2 (they ran the
women at the same time as the nine headlight entries, 2 gates),
although I think I got her back... I dunno. And it's not like she
lapped me, so I must have caught up to the ladies' gate. But it's
pretty funny because I have the image stuck in my mind when she was
next to me in the corner and I looked over and for a moment there,
longer than a split second, it was like we were looking at each other
over a coffee table, smiling.
I like your kid.

Well, I just got the engine out. Aside from the heat it wasn't so bad. I
probably took more things off than necessary but I got it out without
breaking anything;) Wife asked me how much extra it would be if he took
it out but I want to save the money to maybe have him put it back
together and get it running right, especially if I am going to do the
suspension too...
Take a drink of Tang and off to X-Pro to drop off the engine and let Tim
do his magic;)
Still looking for opinions from you all on my choices above, thanks
again, Scotty
