Yeah, but I know you're not trying to sell them here. Just trying to
help out. Even the best shock guy on the planet isn't going to know
what fits something of unknown origin. He can tell you what fits a
'86 CR250 because he can look it up. He's not going to be able
(probably) to tell you the diameter of the spring, the stock rate, the
spring length, etc. BUT, he can look it up. Without the specs on
yours, it's going to be difficult to cross reference.

Plus, lots of shops won't mess with it due to liability concerns.
Even on my Japanese RM-250 I had difficulty finding a shop to weld my
swingarm for just this reason. I guess they figure if the suspension
screws up it could result in serious injury, so rather than use
something less than OEM, or adjust without the OEM manual, they simply
refuse to work on it.

And good luck finding a salvage yard that'll work with you too. We
have a big local place called "Bate's" that has been around forever.
When I began fixing up my old RM four or five years ago I stopped in
there with the intent of searching through their inventory for a rear
shock that might work (mine was blown with a pitted shaft).

"Can I help you?"
"Yessir, I wanted to look and see if I could find a shock and some
other small parts."
"What kind of bike?"
"Well, uhhh, it's a 1985 Suzuki RM-250."
<silence while he punches buttons on his computer>
"We don't have any of those."
"Well, can I just take a look? I have the measurements and maybe
something else will fit."
"Sorry, we don't allow anyone in the yard."
"Really? Since wheen?"
"Several years ago... it's an insurance thing."

I walked out shaking my head. I'm almost sure I could've found
several items to purchase given the chance. Instead, they got no sale
and a dissatisfied customer.

For example, I also needed a swingarm chain slider. The RM 125 of
that era uses the same part, and there are a couple of different years
that will work. But I wasn't gonna stand there at the counter while he
searched every available option that I fed him. Sometimes you just
gotta *see*, ya know?

Later I found another salvage yard up in McKinney that would still
let you go out in the yard. But 90% of their inventory wasn't covered
and everything was rusted all to hell. Then they went out of business.

People are dumb.

Me, mostly... for having a 23 year old dirt bike.

Well, I could get stuck but it is good practice anyway. I had an
opportunity to try out a CRF 100 today, but with my busted up foot I
turned the guy down. "No problem" he said, "later in the week then?"
We are both there all the time so I will get to try one probably
thursday of saturday, I am pretty excited, looks like a nice bike. He
just bought it for his wife for 2 grand, leftover 07 and all.. Dead at
the track to day so I could not look at to many bikes, but I did
notice none of the ones I saw were set up like ours;(( Oh well, great
day at the track, I didn't break me or tear up any equipment.. Just
got in, more later, you might want to see the pic of my chow in the
chest protector, we thought it was cool..

That would render a salvage yard useless !

Well, maybe. I ride newer bikes but drove OLD cars. I've been
nursing my baby (82 Volvo) trying to get her to 500k miles. The body
is way past
gone but the motor still purrrrs. Luckily we've got a good Volvo
shop / salvage here.
