Hi,
I've got an aftermarket tank on my 91 Dr350S and the fuel petcock has a
fine mesh screen.
Is there any reason to put an inline filter between the tank and the carb?
I got that suggestion from another guy, but I dont think it is necessary.

Not necessary, but sometimes desireable. It all depends on how clean you
keep your tank. On my KTM, I run a small inline filter on the auxilliary
tank.

Get an inline filter also. That mesh filter will keep out large
particulate matter, but isn't the "last word" in fuel filtration.
If your "fun time" is worth more that the $3 filter, it's really worth
the $3.

I use these:

That way when it clogs (and they do, thus indicating they're needed) I
just flow gas through it backwards to clean it out & it's good to go.

I always install one of those. They are cheap, easy to install,
nearly fool proof, last the life of the bike, easy to inspect, ....
