Ok, say you had a 17" front wheel and you were looking for a decent
tire for riding in the dirt. I'm not talking about "Baxter" style
antics, just cruising and exploring and dual-sporty stype stuff. How
do you suppose the flat track tire would work? Maxxis makes a
120/70-17 in several different compounds.
Just wondering...

As long as you disconnect your front brake line and remove the left
side footpeg, it would probably be just fine.
Oh yeah, and make sure the roads and trails you take will not require
a right turn.

Flattrack bikes have left foot pegs. I have a garage full of them dating
from 1956 to 2006. Sometimes the peg is moved rearward and up, but it's
still there.
As for a 17 inch Maxxis flattrack tire on a trail / off road bike, I
would say it would be a bad idea. Even on a 85cc bike, those Maxxis
tires have a short life span, and cost twice as much as a good dual
sport tire or a good knobbie.

degraded state of moral and patriotic feeling which thinks nothing is
worth a war, is worse." --- John Stuart Mill:

Excellent. This is the kind of information I was looking for.
Thank-you!
