My friend recently purchased a 2004 GasGas 450 FSE with the intent to
use it as a dual sport. The kickstand is nearly useless, and I
understand this is a common thing with the GG. Since he's planning to
dual sport it, leaning it against a tree isn't always going to work.

I've heard that there's "a fix" for the kickstand issue, but I don't
know what that fix is. Can anyone point me in the right direction?

Thanks,
Craig

Gaah! I'm sorry, Craig! I haven't been ignoring you, I've just...you
know...I've been really busy and stuff <G> Reading and doing crossword
puzzles and taking walks has really been eating into my free time
lately. I actually took photos of Eric's sidestand last night with the
full intention of e-mailing them to you later this afternoon. No,
really!

No problem, I figured you had stuff going on. Besides, I'm used to
being ignored by women. ;-)

Um, is Eric's "fixed?" Was it when I rode the bike in December?

Doing a little bit of poking around, I see that there's the "auto
retract" problem that people are fixing with a master link. I found
the lack of stability while on the stand to be tricky, at least
relative to the monster kickstand on my XRs, and it doesn't seem like
the master link fix would address that.

Thanks,
Craig

Thanks. I knew you'd understand.

Yes and yes. I take it you didn't think it was?

"Auto-retract"...I like that. Yes, Eric did use the masterlink method
to relocate the spring and no more bloodied shins. The angle at which
the stand protrudes from the bike is all wrong, thus the instability
problem. Don't know if Tim, Dean or Baxter have the same issues,
though. I shortened my sidestand on the Pamp by about 1" and that
solved all my problems. Well, almost all of them...

Craig,
The FSE450 makes a really good DS bike.

The GG kickstand (with the OEM set-up) will stay down as long as the
bike is leaning on it. Moving the bike forward or leaning it upright,
off the stand, will let the kickstand pop up with a lot of force.

This "problem" is caused by the bikes being street legal in Europe,
and the requirement that street legal bikes have "auto-retractable"
kickstands. Gas Gas accomplished this by keeping the kickstand spring
behind the kickstand's pivot point (while the kickstand is down). The
"master link fix" moves the spring ahead of the pivot point.

The 2005 (and later) kickstand was updated (cast aluminum instead of
chromoly steel), and has a much better profile. It rides more out of
the way than earlier models, and mine will actually stay out if I
stand it upright, off the stand. (as long as I don't bump it)

I didn't know that your friend had actually bought the bike, or I
would have gotten back to you by now. I can help him get better
service out of the starting system, and have some really useful tips
for him.
