As a parent, there is no worse sight than watching your kid get hurt.
Listening my son moan and scream with blood pouring out of his face made me
wish it was me instead of him.
We were having a great weekend riding the Snyder Creek area (North Park). He
was riding better than ever. Some of these trails had just cleared of snow,
leaving quite a bit of mud behind. He rocked on one of the trails below the
summit of Parkview Mtn. Video here:

Each evening, after the mosquitoes went to bed, we had a fantastic time
around the camp fire. As you would expect of a 15YO boy, hatchets were great
fun. Coincidentally, he was holding the hatchet right next to where he was
to hurt himself the next day. (I've told Colton this should be his new
myspace cover shot :-)

The next day started out great. We headed up over the Divide on some of the
motorcycle-only single track trails. Nirvana.

After doing the Divide trail, we took the ATV trail over to the Gilsonite
single track. For those that have ridden the MOAR, this trail was part of
the route for the past two years. Being single track, many of the bridges
were intentionally built quite narrow. Regrettably, they don't meet any of
the current USFS design standards.
With Colton in front, I came into a meadow just in time to see his bike
tumbling end over end. I whacked open the throttle, sliding to a stop just
before one of the narrow bridges. Colton was on the ground on the other
side. When I got to him, a steady stream of blood was coming out of the
bottom of his helmet.
After we got his helmet off and the bleeding almost stopped, I put a couple
of butterfly bandages on a 3cm gash in the bottom of his chin. In the
process of checking the wound, I could see bone. We both felt much better
when the wound was closed back up. He was pretty shaken up and sore, but the
other gear saved him from much more serious injuries.
Here's the crash site:

We were approaching from the right hand side in the picture. Colton was in
3rd gear coming out of the corner. When he hit the bridge, his front wheel
washed out on the gravel and dropped off the edge of the bridge. At that
point, he pushed off and landed on the bridge, catching his chin on the
corner of the timbers. The front end of the bike dropped three feet into the
stream, causing the back end of the bike to flip over. If he'd stayed on the
seat, it would have been an ugly pile driver situation.
It was a long slow ride out. I rode his bike over the harder sections. We
had about 1/2 mile to the trailhead, then another 14 miles of dirt road to
get back to highway 125. From there, it was about 8 miles of highway.
We broke camp and headed back to town. At Urgent Care, he got 7 stitches.
He's kind of sore all over today. I am so grateful that the cut was the
only significant injury. This could have been so much worse. I'll be leaving
special prayers of thanks to his guardian angel.

Whew. BTDT too.
That's very cool his injury was not more serious. Three cheers for the
guardian angels, I know ours have been working overtime lately. I hope
they're getting compensated properly...
Let us know when HellBoy is back up.

I'm glad it wasn't too terrible of an ending. Sounds like it was
a fun trip with one exception. Get Well Soon wishes for HellBoy.

That's exactly what we were saying on the way home.
"Other than that, Mrs. Lincoln, how was the play?"
:-)
When we got home, he told mom, "At least I got to ride a lot of really nice
trails before this happened"
