As many of you loyal RMD readers know, I have not been riding way too
often these days. I guess it comes down to combination of time,
money, injury and desire.
So, I was invited down to at my friends John Grim's place in the Santa
Cruz mountains. He has a big chunk of land and I have ridden trials
bikes out there numerous times. This July 5th, was circle track day.
John built a small circle track that is perfect for XR100s-230s. It
was OK for 300cc GasGas bikes as well. So, I rode circles until I was
tired and that equated to about 10 miles with my left leg extended up
by the triple clamp the whole time. Now I feel like my left leg has
been nearly yanked off my body. I #$%^& hurts!
I learned that I could go about the same overall speed in 2nd, 3rd or
4th gear. I had a hard time getting too much traction, making hanging
the back out dicey. Of course, I racing, and backing off the throttle
was just not an option. I was dreaming of the dirt roads on the way
back to Baum from Smiley Creek Lodge and wishing for that dirt on this
track. Oh well, I did manage about 1 mile of single track, but I
didn't want to tear up the trails with a knobby tire, so I rode very
sedate. I did have fun climbing the walls of the track trials style.
My previous day was filled with drinking and I paid for it in the hot
afternoon sun. I wore down and called it quits. I was spent.
July 6th was a street bike trip to Half Moon Bay for a late breakfast,
then to SF to people watch and home. It was a very nice ride.

Thanks for the report--glad to hear you're riding again.

Next weekend, I'm teaching my company president's twin boy and and
girl how to ride. It should prove interesting as they are both 17
years old.

Where're you taking them?
At first thought this seemed a risky work maneuver, but the more I
think about it, you'll probably wind up with a corner office before
the year's out :)

I dunno, what 17 Y.O. boy WON'T want to ride like Baxter, and what are
the chances that one that is brand new to riding won't spend a little
time eating dirt if he tries?
It's a good thing Mikey is blessed with an abundance of natural charm.
