I'm thinking seriously about joining the fight to "Save the 2-Stroke" and
looking for opinions pro & con on the KDX220R. I've heard that they pull
like a tractor down low and still have some snap at the top like a good
smoker should plus supposedly handle great. For those that don't know me,
I'm 5'10 and ~205 with gear and woods ride 99.6% of the time. May get into
doing a few Enduro's or HS's down the road, but for now just enjoy spirited
pleasure riding with my 2 best buddies (son's) and other spodes (you know
who you are!).

Currently looking at 2 different bikes.....
http://www.georgiaoffroad.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t $457 and a local '04
that is completely stock except for an aftermarket pipe and jetting. I'll be
meeting the local guy to ride at a nearby State ORV for a test ride on my
home turf.

Anything I should be looking out for specific to this bike, known issues or
weak points?

I've never heard anything but good about these. Dean had one that was
crap but that was an issue with the previous owner.

The KDX is a very good, even excellent, bike for the needs KW describes.

Mine was a 1987 model that was free to me as a basket case. The bike was
thoroughly whipped and flogged to death. The frame was shot - ovaled out
where the linkage mounted. Some creative jigging and welding fxed up that
part but something else would let go virtually every time I rode the thing.
This was back when my marriage was swirling towards the drain and I just
needed to ride for sanity's sake. I'll never forget that bike laying on its
side at Thomaston Dam and I'm jumping up and down on the side of the bike
cursing it for breaking *again* and yealling something about "I only get to
ride now and then and why TF..." Oh man, I completely lost my shit that day.

The last good ride I had on that was our day at Jolly Roger MX, which was
like a nial in the coffin for that bike because a wheel hub (I think) failed
immediately after that beating.

A KDX in good condition is pretty bulletproof really, though. Very user
friendly power, especially for a 2stroke.. The 200 is more race oriented and
has more hit than the 220 which is the gentleman's play bike version, I
think.

Just ask the standard questions about how the guy serviced it. How often did
he do air filter and oil, etc. Ask him how tough the linkage was to service
and he'll probably glaze over with a quizical look on his face.

If it's replacing the DR, I think you will be very pleased with the feel of
the whole package.

HTH,
Dean

I think it will be a big change from the DR...

I've heard that they are pretty good bikes (altough outdated). I've
also heard that both the KTM 200 and Gas Gas 200 are fsuperior in just
about every way... weight, power, suspension, etc. But if you can pick
one up cheap, give it a try. It should be a pretty capable woods
weapon.

Seems I may have heard that the KDX200 was a bit more spirited than
the 220???

John Friend is looking for a couple dual sports... don't know if he
would be interested in a '91 or not?

We are going to Loretta Lynn on the 19th... if you care to join us.
