I putzed with our CR80 again today.
When we got the POS, it had a two-step richer than stock main, one clip
richer than stock needle, and stock pilot. The bike burbled like me
after a baked-bean and broccli benefit dinner, smoked like a
mosquito-fogging truck from the 70s, was completely covered with
spooge, and drooled like uasimodo after getting hit in the head with a
brick. Oddly, the plug still works, and I can start bike with my hand
on the first or second try. I've since dropped the main to stock,
tried the needle stock, one step richer (by accident), and it is now at
one clip position leaner. I've dropped the pilot one and now two steps
leaner than stock.
Nothing makes any difference. The bike still burbles off idle and
while holding all lower-mid throttle positions after a few seconds. It
seems to scream cleanly at WFO, but did that even with the 2-step
richer main. The front of the motor is lightly covered with spooge,
but oil is not running out of the end of the exhaust (at least not yet)
- which appears to be an improvement. The air screw has absolutely no
effect on anything - including idle speed. I've tried settings 1/2
turn through 4-5 turns out, with no effect. It's been about 50 degrees
ambient every day I've messed with it.
I've run about a 1/2 gallon of fuel through it so far, with Yamalube
2-stink oil (semi-synthetic) at ~32:1. I'm still thinking that there
is a wet-side crank leak (hence the spooge), but it can't be all that
bad - I'll find out after some more ride time when I drain the oil.
I can't make the motor run clean - can't even seem to make a
significant difference. My son is getting discouraged, and my
frustration level is growing - of course this is doing nothing but
reinforce my pathelogical hatred for 2-strokes. I just don't know what
to do next.

OK Jay, you can wipe those tears away!
Honda sends those little bikes out the door jetted rich all the
way around so they won't nuke in the first few hours of running.
The air screw makes no difference because the pilot jet is too rich.
Pick up the next 2 sizes smaller pilot jets. The air screw should
effect the idle when you adjust it and you are looking to be ~ 2 turns
out when the pilot is the correct size.
Once you get the pilot set, the needle and slide are next. You might
need a leaner needle, but you should be able to get it to run OK with
the stock needle. I would adjust the needle leaner until you get a
lean bog, then you know were you are with the mid-range, so to speak.
Obviously, it pulls the main, but there may be room for improvment.
FMF says to use a 122 main, stock needle middle clip position and has
no pilot listed.
Good Luck,
Mike
