Boy I'm confused! I just serviced my forks and shock just to find
that my new 1997 (new to me but obviously old) yz 250 2-smoker with
Kayabas has 24 clicks on the clickers where as the manual states that
16 is max! This is OEM equipment, so what the heck is happening?
Obviously, if I was "In Tune" with suspension (pun intended), I could
adjust by feel, but I'm pretty marginal as a rider and can't
distinguish between semi-F#$&ed-up settings and "in the ball park"
ones until I get "bitten". (One setting feels great over braking
bumps but then I get thrown over the whoops... etc.). I figure that
the factory manual gives a good starting point.... until I have 33%
MORE clicks!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Any ideas? Is there a ratio or something to use in this case?
Thanks for any help!

No ratio. Generally, the clickers pull a pin out of a hole, or pull a
stop away from a valve. The important metric is # of clicks away from
all the way in. IOW, click 16 out is still 16 - more clicks just go
even further out, although once your wide open (at 16 clicks out),
there's probably little effect for more.
My forks have a hydraulic lock on the cap that sets the # of clicks
out - if the hydraulic lock is set too far out during a servicer,
you'd end up with too many clicks. Easy mistake to make. At any
rate, don't worry about it.
