Motorcyclist crashes in helmet law protest, dies
(Reuters) - A bare-headed motorcyclist riding in protest of New York
state's helmet law crashed, struck his head on the roadway and died
from his injuries, state police said on Sunday.
Philip Contos, 55, was riding among a large group of motorcyclists
staging an organized protest ride in western New York near Syracuse
against the state law requiring all motorcyclists to wear helmets.
Troopers say Contos "Hit the brakes, lost control, was ejected and
struck his head on the road. He suffered a skull fracture."
The Parish, New York, resident crashed on Saturday on Route 11 in
Onondaga, New York, and was pronounced dead later at a local hospital,
state Trooper Robert Jureller said.
Doctors at Upstate University Hospital, where Contos was pronounced
dead, said he would have survived if he was wearing a helmet.

Gary Busey was lucky.
The reason that some prey insects taste bad is so that their predators
learn to leave that particular bug alone. If they were actually
poisonous, there would be no learning experience for the survivors.
Sometimes ya gotta take one for the team.
Happy 4th!

Darwinism at work. Or too steep a learning curve. It helps when one
hits the ground w/o helmet at ridiculously low speeds while young/new
to the sport. I do vividly remember WFO pacing thru the woods on a
beastly Bultaco 370 sans helmet. Next day when towing it back to the
farm from the spot where it ran dry, I managed to pickup the rope with
the front wheel, and went down good. One stop to argue helmets after
such incident.

When I lived in Florida as a teenager you could get a driver's license
to ride motocycles/scooters at age 14. The MC had to be less than 5
bhp, daytime only and no freeway riding.
As my brother was 4 yrs older than I, he got a Lambretta long before I
could ride. He came home one day after a small crash, didn't hurt the
scoot much, a little road rash on him but I was very impressed with
the deep gouges on his helmet. The problem was that the helmet was
strapped to the scooter, not his head. Of course, my first thought
was, "What if you had hit your head? Can your skull take that kind of
abuse?"
At age 65, he now is an avid Hardly Ableson rider, member/officer in
the local ABATE chapter, wears T-shirts with "Loud Bikes Save Lives"
on them and and rides with one of those pretend beanie hats instead of
a legitimate helmet.
After he watched some helmet cam footage of Murray and I riding
Presidents trail and the Middle Fk of Lime, he thought we were crazy
for doing it...
Apparently, my sister and I got all the brains in the family.
