I'm sure everyone is plenty familiar with the boy n' ballon story from
yesterday.  Personally, I don't think that little ballon could lift a
6 y/o (40-50#).  Mythbusters had to just about fill an entire airplane
hanger with ballons to lift a toddler, although I'm sure all of those
ballons were significantly heavier than the mylar ballon.  Still, it
was pretty small.  Anyone wanna take a guess at dimensions given the
news footage and calculate lift capacity?

It did seem large enough to (maybe) act as a kite to lift a kid, but
would come down pretty quickly.

Initially, the dimensions were stated at 20 feet across, by 5 feet

Rowdy Mouse Racing, who needs helium to fly, just give me decent
suspension so I can land it;)

Some reports said it was helium, others thought it was hot air.  If it was
helium and didn't leak, I don't see why it came down at all.

A couple of decades ago a fugitive from a helium balloon race came down in an
open field up the street.  Many neighbors milling around watching. The leak was
in a really good place for all the kids to come up and breathe it.    Suddenly
comes a yell from the back of the crowd -- "Everybody get back, if there's a
spark it's going to blow up!"

Even the little kids snickered.

did it at least once if you look hard enough.

 JayC  has a thought balloon:

Also a scary thought when considering guys like Glenn Beck and Rush
Limbaugh running around with their media-supported scare tactics. Fear
is always the tool of extremists, and extremists rule the minds of
lazy thinkers.

Do you really think the previous administration didn't use scare
tactics to advance their agenda? I've seen nothing even close to that
fear mongering from this administration. And what is the primary
feeling and sentiment of those who oppose this administration? Fear.

Dare yourself to seek the truth that lies in the middle. It's not less
scary, and it's not as easy, but it's a lot more intelligent.

BTW,  a popular new station that is not Fox had a balloon expert
saying there was no payload aboard that balloon long before it touched
down. The thing was flying sideays, with no stability like a payload
would provide.

Balloon dad is or should be in a world of trouble.
