Hi,

I need help deciding on a different bike!  My son and I ride trails.
Some of them are old railroad beds, some in the woods (more technical),
and would like to start poking around some MX tracks (not racing, just
playing).  My son is 11, and rides an '01 XR100.  He does a great job,
but is very cautious (which I'm very proud of), but this translates
into very slow trail speeds (a lot of stopping, slowing down, etc.).
Mostly 2nd gear on his XR100.  Here is my problem:  I started out 2
years ago riding a chinese 150cc enduro bike, which was a total pooch,
but served it's purpose to get out on the trails with my son.  Last
fall, I decided I wanted something a little more exciting, so I bought
a '98 CR125.  Well, Saturday evening, we went for our first ride of the
season.  We only had like 90 minutes before dark.  We unloaded, rode
about 15 minutes.  I was basically riding at an idle, and fouled a
plug.  I put in a new plug, and we kept riding, but again, I would hit
it for like 100 yards, but then would have to stop and wait for my son.
It just didn't work good.  Then we got in some mud, and I had to help
my son out.  He killed it a few times, and couldn't get it started,
etc.  So I'd have to have him come and hold my bike up (no kickstand),
while I got his started.  The whole experience was just very
cumbersome, and I obviously have the wrong bike for our type of riding
(although that CR is a lot of fun, and really screams).  Here are my
questions:

1)  I'd like to get like a CRF230, KDX200 or 220, or a TTR-250 (I'm not
going to have a lot to spend...That's why I don't have bikes like the
WR on the list).  The KDX is a 2 stroke, but i've heard a lot of people
say it's a great trail bike.  Why wouldn't I have a problem fouling
plugs on that bike with our type of riding?

2)  If I had one of the bikes listed above, would they be sufficient to
"poke around" an MX track occasionally (no plans of racing)?

Any other advice you can give me?

Thanks!

I am a big fan of the KDX so that bike would get my vote. The fouling
problem would be greatly diminished on the KDX especially when having it
jetting correctly.  The KDX is made for trail speed stuff where the CR125 is
designed to scream.  Your CR125 is more track oriented than a KDX but I
learned to ride my local MX track on a KDX.

Another option would be a 2 stroke 250 MX bike and a kick stand.  There
are several good options for kick stands out there that can be mounted on
any bike.  250 2 strokes can be had a pretty decent price right now since
many guys are moving to 4 strokes.  You may still have a fouling problem but
it would less than on a 125.

  Just my opinions.
