Got my cast sawed off yesterday-Hallelujah! Don't believe `em when
they tell you the Stryker saw won't cut your skin. It didn't cut my
leg, even though I could feel it against my skin, but it left a nice
little slice in the knobby ankle bone on the outside of my ankle. I
tried to tell the lady but she just thought I was scared. She was a
little startled to see fresh blood in my 40-day-old cast.

Other than it looking like they put my foot back on crooked,
everything looks pretty good. Can't even see where the staples were,
and the 4 incisions look nice and straight. It's healing up nicely,
according to my doctor, even though the x-rays looked exactly the same
to me as they did the day he fixed it.
My leg looks deformed and I swear I can see the outline of the outer
plate through my skin.

The bad news is I will be on crutches til at least Sept 9th. That's,
uh, 32 more days in case anyone besides me wants to keep count. I
thought for sure I'd be walking with a cane and the Cam-Lok cast by
the time we left for Idaho on Aug 22, but that is not to be. I guess
that means I can't clean the house, pack the food, load the van, ride
my Husky, go for a walk, carry firewood, walk to the river/hot springs
under my own power, etc., etc., etc... Can't really convey the
disappointment I'm feeling right now with mere words, but suffice to
say that this is not how I was planning to spend my summer vacation.
On the other hand, I do get to go to Idaho for 2 weeks, and I'm using
not one day of my vacation for it. I guess I can sit around and be
useless there just as easily as I can here.

I asked about a timeline for returning to work and he said we'd talk
about that when I see him on Sep 9th. Ok...that'll be my 75th day off
work...for a broken ankle. Man, what an ordeal this stupid thing
turned out to be...

I guess we'll be leaving the Husky home.

Damn it.

This was my first reaction when I saw my foot after they
removed the cast...... Hey!!! That is not where my foot "used" to
be!!!
Dr. says. "Oh sure it is" "No...it's my foot, I have had it down
there
for the last 48 years, and I KNOW it is not where it was before the
break.
Oh well... That is where it is now, live with it......Thanks Doc.....

This also I can relate too. I have a clear outline of the 9" long
plate
running down my leg. I have the added pleasure of still clearly
seeing the insission and staple scars.
With any luck, sometime before the end of the year I will
be supporting a new scar where they REMOVED that damn
thing.

I am sorry to hear this is going to screw up your trip to
Idaho. Like you said. kick back, enjoy the trip and set
a fine example for the rest of us to follow....if we are
ever (again) in the same shoes....boot...cast....crutch...

I see you did find the silver lining in all of this.
Best wishes for a complete recovery. I want to ride with
you and Eric again one of these days.

Crap! When I tore up my ankle a month or so ago, the doc said "at your
age, sometimes it's better to break it than mess up the tendons".. I
think he was wrong as although I do have day where it hurts real bad
and even falls out from under me, I only missed a week or so of
riding.. Good luck to you, I am sending good thoughts and karma your
way.. ;) And hey, it can't be all that bad, you still have a Husky;)

You know, you laugh, but...

Yeah, but that's ok. Honestly, though, once the realization set in
that I would be physically incapable of riding my Husky (in hindsight,
I really don't know what I was thinking...I was just being way overly
optimistic, I think...or totally in denial, more like it...) I thought
to myself, "I wonder if Joe has a kwad? I could probably get on a kwad
and explore the same roads I would have ridden on the Husky...no one
will recognize me in the Clearwater...I wonder if I can rent
one...hmmm..." I tell ya, it would surely beat sitting in camp and not
being able to explore the phenomenally beautiful Clearwater. Maybe
Theresa and I will just take Tim's truck out and thrash it instead.
