Hi All,
Off topic sorry but need a new GPS, we have a TomTom and it has lost
its mind.
What do you use and why?
Thanks a lot.

For what use?
For car driving--finding addresses, gas stations when we're on a trip,
etc. we have a Magellan that's been trouble free for several years,
found it cheap on amazon. Good bright display, easy to use.
For off-road, using maps and tracks (bread crumb trail to find your
way back, etc.) I use a Garmin 60CSx. The 76 series is the same
internals with a little better packaging. The software is a very
important part of a mapping gps, and while garmin's can be irritating
at times, it works well on both Mac OS and Windows which is the main
reason I went Garmin.

I don't know, but I do know based on following others to races and
comparing routes, my TomTom is the most unreliable, piece of crap out
there. I will take you off a highway and through a city when no matter
what settings you put in, it will take you "there" one way, and home a
totally different, through towns and such... It's just stupid.
My friends used a Magellan and theirs always gave a shorter, more
sensible route than my tomtom... Just my opinion, based on years of use...

I have a Garmin NUVI that does much the same thing. Once coming out
from camping at Baumgartner I had it running, destination "Home". For
those who have been there, not long after you start climbing out from
the lake, the GPS wanted me to turn off the main paved highway onto a
abandoned, gated, marked closed to motorized two track headed off
through the foothills.
There have been a few instances lately of "older" people getting way
lost, stuck and stranded on back roads in the NW. Some have died. It
wouldn't surprise me if they were following the cockamamie GPS
directions w/o knowing what they were getting into.
