I have a bad feeling about this Seca 750 I got off of craigslist, so I
went over to the local cop shop this afternoon to have them run the
VIN and make sure it isn't hot.
The problem is that the serial number sticker is damaged and missing
some of the middle characters. I think the cop said there should be 17
characters. I'm fairly sure the characters I'm missing are common to
all 1982 Yamaha Seca 750s and I have all the ending numbers that are
unique to the subject bike. Those numbers are stamped into the frame
and match the motor numbers. So, I'm looking for the prefix that means
seca 750.
I have 5G2-100626 stamped on frame and motor.
Sticker says:
JVA <missing, torn> 4 CA 100626
manufactured 6/81
I've usually found this info easily for other bikes but somehow I'm
coming up dry on this one. Maybe somebody knows a good link?
Anyway, the cop couldn't help me and suggested I go to the State
Police instead, where I can fill out papers and maybe pay a fee, just
to try and do the right thing. If they can't figure it out when it's
handed to them, I guess I shouldn't worry too much about getting in
trouble. I tried.
anyway...
just rambling here...
I was waiting for the school bus this afternoon and a neighbor's split
rail fence had a rail that fell out. I was fiddling with the rail
trying to put it back like a nice guy and the lady came out and asked
me not to. She's got a friend who will do that. No good deed goes
unpunished.
I'm ready to go live in the middle of nowhere. Grow me some dental
floss.

Don't forget to wax it down once it's done being raised.

The "V" should be a "Y" (Yamaha)
The 5G2 from the frame is the model ID code and gets a pair of 0's added to
it for the VIN.

Mike,
Thank you for the links. I found them not only very useful, but
also very interesting.
One can substitute XV for XJ, and get my old street bike. It's the
v-twin version of the '81 Seca , the XV920RH (destined for the
European market, but imported to the US in somewhat limited
quantities).
Here's what it looked like when new, and also a spec sheet.

It was a heck of a fun bike to ride, and a joy to travel on after I
had Corbin custom make me a seat (in '86).
I hope that you are healing well.
