So it finally stopped raining (the last week has been real wet) so we
got to go riding. Usually I tell you about the Mouse, but today will
be all about me (Rowdy). Anyway, we got to the track, well almost, and
the river was across the road. There were several wet areas where I
could see trucks had gone through, and the water was not moving, so I
sent the Mouse out ahead to walk the bridge and make sure it was still
there;) My Blazer is not as high as most of the haulers, and I could
hear the tailpipe bubbling, but I made it through.
Well, waking this morning in severe pain reminded me that I am usually
the oldest cat on the track, now I know why. You see, I am starting to
feel the clutch and power band so I am getting a lot faster. Man, it
feels sooo cool to speed shift up through and slide back down into the
corners. It is pretty scary on the big track for me, the ruts are
sometimes a foot deep and inches apart with no way around but to drive
through. The big tire on the front makes it easier, but my brain still
is getting used to hitting the throttle when I am starting to crash,
just seems counterproductive, but is works.. Most of the time.
I did go over once in the softer stuff after my front tire popped out
of a rut on a very tight corner. The bike was on my leg and I was
laying on the low side of the banking, as usual. I dug myself out and
restarted the bike, and drove back to the lot.. Man, the Mouse was
ticked off as I smashed up her new paint job pretty good;)
I am still having trouble on the jumps, I just can't seem to get the
hang of being in the air. I am on the edge of either going sideways,
or over the bars every time. I find, as this is a well tended and
shaped MX track, the kickers are pretty sharp, that I actually do a
little better when I hit them faster and have more time in the air. Of
course on the occasion when that doesn't work, I am way beyond my
strength and ability when I land.
All in all though, I am really starting to feel the machine.. On long
corners and in and out of hard corners I can really move the rear end
around just like I used to do sooooo many years ago on the street. My
clutch work and understanding of the powerband is just like when I was
a kid too. I can now see why I need "better" bikes (we ride Chinese/
Nipponese clones) with better suspension, I could see myself really
ripping up the track.
I rode a lot more laps yesterday than usual as the Mouse decided to
ride the pitbike most of the time. We took a couple of laps together
(she came to ride with me ;) on the big course and I did a dozen or so
on my own. I have to wonder though if 50 is getting too old for this.
I am usually in pretty decent shape but it was a tough night and the
morning didn't bring any relief from the pain..
Well, I am getting ready to go back today but the website says the
track is closed today. I imagine the road is pretty flooded out with
the hard rain last night, hopefully not the track. That's OK though.
We have an invite to a private track nearby where it is a little more
relaxed. Mostly local families, a kids track, a quad/go-cart track, a
MX track, a local reservoir to swim in, and a bonfire later this
evening. I am kind of excited as I left my home back in the early 80's
and moved back recently to take care of my dad. I will probably run
into a lot of my old buds there, the guy who invited me went to school
with me back then, he said a lot of old school locals hang out there.
Ummmmm, maybe I should leave the Mouse at home.
In a lot of pain, but still smiling.
Thanks again for listening, Scotty (The original Rowdy Mouse)
SBS 1969 ;) Anybody here remember them?

Sounds like you're having good old fashion fun. I'm jealous.
Thanks for the report,

Plenty of older riders. I think Deeney is 64 or something like that.
Most of the RMD old dudes that I've ridden with are very good riders.
It's hard on the ego. ;-)

I'm not over 50 yet, but I *feel* like I'm turning the corner on, oh,
74 or so...does that count?
